The Florida School Counselor Association (FSCA) is pleased to announce Shawn Griffon as a finalist for the 2026–2027 Florida School Counselor of the Year®.

Griffon is a school counselor at Barbara A. Harvey K–8 in the School District of Manatee County, where she serves more than 1,700 students. She has worked as a school counselor since 2013 and holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Florida and a master’s degree in school counseling from Argosy University.

Through her leadership, advocacy, and data-informed practice, Griffon has implemented a comprehensive school counseling program (CSCP) aligned with the ASCA National Model®. earning the RAMP® designation in 2026. She is recognized as an inspiring colleague, effective communicator, and dedicated advocate who creates sustainable systems centered on student success.

“She leads with purpose. She builds systems that last. And she never loses sight of the students behind the data,” said Candace Shim, Griffon’s fellow school counselor.

In developing the CSCP at Harvey K-8, Griffon prioritized gathering input from students, families and educators through needs assessments and collaborative meetings, helping ensure the school counseling program remains responsive to the needs of the school community. 

“Mrs. Griffon’s comprehensive approach to program planning is both strategic and inclusive,” said Dr. Hayley Rio, executive principal of Barbara A. Harvey K–8. “Her ability to evaluate program effectiveness using multiple data sources demonstrates her commitment to continuous improvement and student achievement.”

Rio also described Griffon as “an exceptional school counselor whose dedication to student success, data-driven practices and collaborative approach make her an invaluable asset to our school. In every aspect of her role, Ms. Griffon exemplifies professionalism, compassion and a deep dedication to student well-being. She is a thoughtful problem-solver, a strong advocate for students and a collaborative partner to staff and families alike.”

“Being named a Florida School Counselor of the Year finalist is a testament to Shawn Griffon’s skill, commitment and impact on the students and families of Barbara A. Harvey K–8,” said Dr. Rebecca A. Schumacher, FSCA Executive Director. “On behalf of the Florida School Counselor Association and the selection committee, we are thrilled to recognize and honor Shawn’s inspiring work. We congratulate her on this well-deserved distinction.”

Griffon will be recognized and celebrated during the 2026 FSCA Convention this October.
